Love Is In The Air at Hillside Lodge Care Home

Care Home residents working together to measure ingredients in mixing bowl

This February, Hillside Lodge has been celebrating Valentine’s Day in style, with themed activities and fabulous entertainment

On Friday 6th February our residents were treated to a wonderful Vintage Valentine performance from the fabulous Sadie at Strictly Entertainment. Sadie wowed everyone not only with her singing but with her stunning costume changes throughout the show, full of colour, glitz and glamour.

Singing along to some of our favourite songs was a brilliant opportunity to reminisce about happy memories and some upbeat songs even got our feet moving and hands clapping. Valentine's is a lovely time to celebrate the love between couples, families and friends, and enjoy the close community spirit in our care home. Our residents thoroughly enjoyed the performance, along with a little tipple, making it a truly special afternoon.

Later on in the month, our brilliant activities coordinator organised a Valentine’s baking session. The activity was filled with smiles and laughter from the mixing bowl to the masterpieces we finished with. Our residents made their heart-shaped valentine biscuits, our fantastic kitchen team baked them, then following day we decorated them together. We think it’s safe to say they looked almost too good to eat!

Activities like these offer so much more than a delicious treat at the end. Mixing, stirring, rolling and decorating encourage gentle physical movement and help residents maintain fine motor skills in a fun and purposeful way. When it comes to icing and decorating, everyone has the chance to express their creativity, choosing colours, patterns and personal touches that make each bake unique.

Baking together naturally fosters teamwork, with residents and staff sharing tasks, supporting one another and enjoying meaningful social connection around the table. The familiar aromas and recipes often evoke positive memories of family kitchens and special occasions, sparking conversation and storytelling. From the feel of soft dough to the scent of freshly baked cakes, the sensory stimulation is both comforting and engaging. Most importantly, when the timer dings and the bakes are proudly displayed, there is a wonderful sense of achievement and pride that comes from creating something together.
