Our Garden Revamp Creates A Warm Welcome
Over the past few weeks, we have been busy giving the front garden at Hillside Lodge Care Home a lovely refresh in preparation for the warmer months ahead. With the sun shining down to spur us on, residents and staff have worked together to brighten up the space and make it even more welcoming for visitors, residents and staff alike.
As part of the project, members of our activities team took a small group of residents on a trip to a local garden centre to choose plants and flowers for the garden. Residents loved being involved in selecting colours and arrangements and many enjoyed seeing their ideas come to life back at the home.
Gardening is an important hobby for some of our residents and the activity provided a calming pastime, as well as a wonderful opportunity for reminiscence for those living with dementia. Working together towards a common goal also helped strengthen the friendships and sense of community we have built here at Hillside Lodge, with many residents feeling proud to play a part in sprucing up the front of their home. This feeling of belonging and purpose is crucial for resident’s emotional health and is special part of life here at our care home in Berwick-Upon-Tweed.
Having a welcoming and relaxing outdoor space is so important for residents’ wellbeing. Alongside encouraging gentle movement and time outdoors in the fresh air and sunshine, spending time in the garden can also have a hugely positive impact on mental health, particularly for older people.
We would also like to say a very special thank you to one of our residents’ relatives, Doreen and family, who went above and beyond to support the project. They kindly collected additional plants and topsoil and even helped out in the garden despite the rain. Their kindness and support are greatly appreciated by everyone at Hillside Lodge.
We are now all looking forward to seeing everything begin to bloom over the coming weeks.
